This is one of those recipes where you can make them last minute or ahead of time, using regular pantry ingredients, these pretzels are economical and they're freezer friendly too, so if you wanted to make up a batch ahead of time, for example, you have friends coming over for Game Day or a party, pop them in the freezer and then warm through in the oven when you want to serve.

For this pretzel recipe, we've kept it really simple, and used ready made refrigerated pizza dough. If you have some homemade pizza dough left over from our other recipe, feel free to make some of these and freeze them for a later date!

What flavors can I make these pretzels?

This recipe gives you a variety of options for flavorings.

You can go with a sprinkling of grated cheese on top, ( use whatever cheese you prefer), or you could sprinkle sesame seeds, sea salt, perhaps paprika, or some mixed herbs.

If you wanted to make a sweet version, try a mix of sugar and cinnamon, before baking, or after baking, you could drizzle a simple powdered sugar water mix on them as a glaze, maybe even add some colored sprinkles over them too!

We'd love to see what flavors you've added to your pretzels so please do let us know in the comments below. You may even inspire others with your ideas too!

Serving ideas

For serving, you can pop them in a basket or bowl, and serve tham as is, or make up a few different dips, such as our caramelised onion dip, Mexican Street Corn Dip, or our warm meaty cheesy dip. So delicious!

Alternatively, you could serve these with a lovely bowl of soup, instead of bread, or eat with a chili or stew.
So whatever you decide on flavors and serving, please enjoy and happy cooking!

  2. AWESOME. my lovely coworker has turned me into a pretzel junkie! Ever since she brought in an awesome edition of Better Homes and Gardens, everything’s pretzel’s for me now. Thanks!

  3. I made these tonight and I don’t know if I did something wrong but they were terrible. They tasted like baking soda water. Can you tell me why this would have happened? I made them just like your recipe. They puffed up and then when I put them on the baking sheet they fell. Smh???

    1. Hi Amanda, I’m sorry to hear about your pretzels. We have had really great reviews on this recipe and this is the first report we’ve had that they didn’t turn out how you had expected, and I am sure people would let me know!
I wonder if you say they tasted like baking soda, did you use the correct measure for that ingredient? 1/3 cup, or 70g of baking soda? That is the only thing I can think that has caused the taste? maybe you used too much?
      Mary

      1. Hi, Thank you for your feedback re the baking soda, as this is the second report we’ve had regarding the taste, I have advised reducing the amount used in the recipe for suture use. That said, we have had many many people make this, without mentioning, but I like to try and find solutions should a recipe on Lovefoodies not be as expected!
        Thanks once again!

    1. Hi Cindy, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work! But I haven’t tried it myself with homemade, so I can;t be sure. I’m just thinking give it a go! You could always try making a couple the next time you do a pizza as a test? and then you know. be sure to report back with your findings as now you have me curious!
