This coffee-flavored cream cheese frosting tastes absolutely wonderful! We made this quick and simple frosting recipe to go with our coffee walnut cake, and the combination of this buttery frosting compliments the cake perfectly.

This is a basic cream cheese frosting recipe, which you can alter to suit what you want to use it for. We've added some suggestions at the end for you.

One of the uses which is fantastic, apart from using on cakes, is to use this frosting to sandwich 2 cookies together. For example, our butter walnut cookies or our vanilla butter cookies. These are perfect with a cup of coffee!

We've got a few different frostings, normally, we use a whipped cream frosting when we make our cakes over at Lovefoodies, but this cream cheese type of frosting is perfect and has a longer shelf life than fresh whipped cream. So if you wanted to make ahead and refrigerate it, it's convenient.

The frosting ingredients are regular pantry ingredients and as we know, cream cheese can keep refrigerated for quite some time, so you don't need to go buy everything fresh to make this handy frosting.

So let's get straight to the recipe and see how we make this delicious coffee frosting. Enjoy!

Ingredients

8 oz or 200g cream cheese

3 & ½ oz or 100 g butter

3 Tbsp regular sugar

1 Tbsp coffee granules dissolved in 2 teaspoons hot water

Instructions

1. Place the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beat until pale and fluffy. This will take around 3 minutes.

2. Add the cream cheese and coffee mixture and beat until smooth.

At this point, taste the frosting for sweetness. If you want more, just add some more sugar, half a tablespoon at a time until it is to your liking.

3. Refrigerate the frosting for up to a week, covered with plastic wrap, or use immediately.

  • If you're using this frosting for cakes, you can use it immediately as it's soft enough to get a smooth spread
  • If you're using it as a filling to sandwich cookies together, we suggest refrigerating for an hour or more as the frosting will firm up as it is being chilled.
  • This frosting will last for up to 2 weeks refrigerated and covered with plastic wrap.
  • We don't suggest freezing the frosting

Variations

  • you can easily change up the flavors, for example, by adding vanilla extract
  • Adding 2 teaspoons of lime, orange, or lemon zest on its own will change the flavor completely. You won't need to add any extract as the zest will have enough flavor to give you a nice hint of the citrus you're after
  • Change the color for a party theme by adding red, green, blue food coloring to suit. We suggest only a teaspoon at a time, mix and see if you need more.
